The Kid Who Would Be King Movie Review

The Kid Who Would Be King, We get some nicely done animation with some amazing narration in the background that gives some backstory for the viewers and prepares them for this movie. Really makes me wish this entire movie was animated, to be honest. This art style was amazing and would suit this movie so well but alas, Animation is too time taking so this movie decided to choose the live action path.

That doesn’t make this movie any worse though, I would just prefer a completely animated version of the story is all I’m saying. Anyways, after we jump into the real world some cliche bully thing happens and this movie gets pretty boring until Alex finds himself in front of the sword of King Arthur.

I don’t think any normal person would just pick up a random sword that they see but I guess this movie has to continue so Alex does it. I still wish that something not as cliche as a bully chase led him to the sword, though. Okay so now let’s talk about the characters of this movie. Alex is the most basic and cliche protagonist ever and therefore he is boring. His friend named Bedders or something is equally as boring as him, if not even more because he is also the most cliche and basic supporting character ever.

I really don’t like how everything is so cliche about this movie. Thankfully, the bullies have SOME substance as characters and grow as the story goes on. I would say that Lance is my favorite character of this movie, which is surprising, honestly. Merlin is also in this movie and I would prefer it if he stayed in his old form for like the entire movie.

The young version of him sucks. And I guess they wanted to try out something new with Merlin this time around in the movie and I appreciate that but they made his younger version so cringy for no reason at all. Okay so now let’s talk about the villain of this movie. She really reminds me of that Enchantress person from Suicide Squad and her minions remind me of Ghost Rider for some reason. Her normal form is pretty cool and kinda creepy but her dragon form sucks.

The dragon form just looks like a goblin-slug-dragon-monster hybrid thingy and it’s just really weird. I really liked that visual of the vines spreading all over Alex’s house and entangling it and all because I thought that was pretty creepy.

I was honestly expecting like a thousand vines to burst out of the ground or something in the final battle but that unfortunately never happened. It would be pretty cool if that happened. The final battle was extremely anticlimactic and really disappointing. I didn’t like how easily Alex defeated the villain and I was expecting her to return once again. I don’t know, it felt like it was so easy to defeat the villain of this movie, who has been shown to us as this powerful evil entity and all.

I would have appreciated it more if Alex needed everyone in his “army” to unite against the villain to defeat it. They even said that evil knows that it will be destroyed if the good unites against it or something and I know that the others were fighting the evil army and all but what if the villain’s army merged or fused with herself? And then all of them had to unite to face one super powerful monster. Wouldn’t that be a lot more satisfying? Rating- 7/10
