Robocop Movie Review

Robocop Movie Review

I am reviewing Robocop which was an overrated and violent movie released in 1987. Let’s begin the review! This movie starts off with a news scene which is probably the most cliche way to start off a movie. The news scene, along with some other scenes, establish that Detroit is a city filled with crime and all and that is exactly the reason why people want to build a cop that can never get tired and never be stopped. A robotic cop.

They even manage to build something like that but that plan backfires horrifically and ends up killing one of them. This is one of the best scenes of the movie because it doesn’t have much competition in the first place, but also because it is also the scene that is somewhat intense. The other action scenes depend on violence and not intensity or amazing visuals like BIG explosions or something like that which really waters them down. And yeah, this is also the scene where we get hinted that this movie is going to be REALLY violent, even for an R Rated movie.

I am not really complaining about the violence though. Sometimes it can actually help this movie but I still do think that this movie went a little overboard with it. Okay so now let’s talk about Robocop himself. His design is actually pretty good but his backstory is still that same old cliche backstory that every single movie cyborg in the world has. He almost got killed by the bad guys and got reborn as a cyborg and blah blah blah. I found it really funny how they started whistling with those birthday whistles or party whistles after he was reborn. Just think about it. You are reborn and some random people start whistling right to your face.

That’s some hilarious stuff. And Anne realizing that Robocop was Murphy just because he did that gun spinning thing with his finger is stupid. I know that she was correct but if it were a normal human, they would think about it more at least once, instead of jumping straight to one conclusion. Like, couldn’t she think for once that what if that gun spinning thing is a weird thing that robots with guns do? That could be a possibility, right? If she didn’t come to the conclusion so easily, it would humanize her character a little more.

But that doesn’t just end there. Even one of the criminals somehow realizes that Robocop is Murphy and is astonished at the fact that he is still alive. Okay, at this point, am I missing something out? How are all these people realizing that Murphy is Robocop. I can still understand Anne’s case but how did this stupid criminal realize that? Okay so Robocop goes to face Mr. Jones, who is one of the villains of this movie but he suddenly starts getting weakened or something because it’s a Product Violation.

Here is where we get to know about the Directive 4 thing and after we know about it, ED-209, which was the failure of a Robocop introduced to us in the beginning of the movie, comes back in the movie to give us another intense scene. I love how whenever this robot comes to the screen it always brings some intense stuff with it. And I also love how ironic it was that it was helping Mr. Jones, who was one of the villains of this movie, to kill Robocop, even though it’s supposed to help the law. And ED-209 gets technically defeated by Robocop since it couldn’t climb down the stairs and after failing to climb down the stairs properly, it starts making weird noises which sounds like a baby crying, I guess.

While this was a stupid scene, I like how it shows us that this machine wouldn’t be as successful as Robocop while dealing with the bad guys and could be easily outsmarted like this. Okay so let’s talk about the final battle already and I really hated how Robocop didn’t have his normal iconic appearance in the final battle. His normal look is way better than that human face on robotic body look, which just comes off as weird and unsettling.

The battle itself tries to be this epic grand finale to this movie but just comes off as average. The best moment from this scene had to be that moment where one of the characters was like “Don’t touch meeeee!!!!” to the other one since he had completely melted at that point. And after this battle, Robocop confront Mr. Jones and reveals his true colors to everyone else.

That is exactly when he realizes that he has been caught and needs to do something to get out of this situation and holds that old man guy as hostage. Robocop is unable to do anything since killing Jones is against the Directive 4 thing because he was an officer of this company. However, the old man guy fires Jones from his company and that allows Robocop to literally fire at the main villain of this movie. After that and a few dialogues, this movie ends. Rating- 5/10.
