Pokemon Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution Movie Review

I would say that this one is better than the original version of Mewtwo. Why? Well, because this one gets much more character development with more dialogue which are also more reasonable and meaningful than the dialogues of the original Mewtwo. He is also way more intimidating in here and I think that’s because of his voice actor. Mewtwo’s voice actor truly did an amazing job in making him intimidating or maybe even scary.

I know that both versions were voice acted by the same actor but all I am saying is that his performance in this one seemed much better! Okay so now let’s talk about the thing that makes it stand out from the original movie- The little changes that it makes. Yes, even though the changes it makes are not so big and don’t change the story a lot, there are still a lot of minor changes and I appreciate that.

Really helps in making this movie not feel like a carbon copy of the original or what I like to call- A Blind Remake. Take notes, Lion King 2019. One of the better changes it makes is showing Mewtwo’s Point of View at the beginning of the movie. They show Mewtwo’s experience with Team Rocket a little more in here and they show us his thought process and all and it just makes Mewtwo be a better character.

It also gives his hate for humans a little more reasoning because if your first impression of humans is Giovanni, of course you would hate humans. Okay so this movie was getting a lot of crap for it’s CG animation and I was also sceptical about it but after watching the movie, I will say it’s just fine. Yes, the humans’ animations could have been improved but the Pokemons’ animations are just fine.

The CG animation doesn’t hurt the movie in any way, shape or form and even if it does for you, I am pretty sure the better character development and performances will make it up. I really don’t like this idea of people dismissing this movie just because it’s in 3D. Even Doraemon Stand By Me was in 3D but it was one of the best Doraemon films of all time.

Similarly, this movie doesn’t get degraded by being 3D. In fact, you know what, I would say this movie is better than the original. Yes, not only does this movie have better character development, better performances and a better final battle but it also did something the original couldn’t do- This one made me emotional.

Yes, while I have watched the original movie lots and lots of times, at no point did I cry at Ash’s Death. But this time, even though I knew it was coming, this movie managed to get me. How? I truly don’t know. Everything is the same so I don’t know how this one made me cry when the original couldn’t. I really want to know what secret ingredient this movie used against me. Okay so now let’s talk about the misleading title of this movie.

This movie is titled “Mewtwo Strikes Back EVOLUTION” so it’s normal for a Pokemon fan to think that Mewtwo would Mega Evolve in this movie but oh wait, he never did. Why did he not Mega Evolve when he literally has not just one but freaking two Mega Forms? And okay, if he didn’t Mega Evolve, why is there a big fat EVOLUTION in the title? What exactly evolved in this movie? Nothing! This movie could have been even better if Mewtwo Mega Evolved and I was completely ready for it but this was a big frustrating let down. Rating- 8/10
